Last week as I was preparing my shopping list, I was going through the store sales and writing down prices. I saw that with a coupon I could get colgate toothpaste for $0.50. I go through my list a second time, just to make sure I didn't forget anything and to weed out the items I don't really need or can wait to buy. You know what - the toothpaste came off the list.
Why? I don't need anymore toothpaste! I have three unused boxes stockpiled, a full tube I'm using, one on my husbands sink and one in the kids bathroom. I don't need anymore - even though it's only $0.50. I used my $0.50 to get some yogurt.
That's phrase "It's Only" is what I believe gets the frugal shopper in trouble. Well it's only this price so I'll pick it up. It's only this amount so I'll buy two. Those It's Only purchases add up. All of a sudden you spent an extra $20 on items you may not use or just really don't need.
Yes, I'll need to buy toothpaste again someday. I'm sure it will go on sale again so I can get it at a good price. For now, I have plenty. And even though it's only $0.50, I just simply don't need it. That's my $0.50 that will go towards something I need this week.
My goal is to save my money and to buy what I need at the best possible price. Not to buy all I can at the lowest price.
As you go through your shopping list, make sure it's not full of it's only price products. Ask yourself, do I really need this, or can I save a few dollars?
