We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well guess what? It’s true!
I have recently cut out the sugared cereal aimed at my kids taste buds and have opted for more homemade breakfast options. But as most moms know, the morning times can be the most hectic. Trying to get kids fed, dressed and off to school in time is a huge challenge!
Here are some breakfast ideas you can make ahead of time and don’t have all the sugar of some popular cereal brands:
Muffins – There are so many things you can do with muffins from simple blueberry to ham and cheese! I bought a mini muffin pan and for some reason my kids just love when I use this! I make blueberry muffins in these and put 3 or 4 in a sandwich baggie. My daughter also likes to take these for a snack at school!
Waffles – Mix up a batch of waffles and freeze them. Flash freeze them first between wax paper. Lay each individual waffle between layers of wax paper until they are frozen. Then put them into a freezer bag. Just pop them in the toaster to heat and eat! Make wheat or buckwheat waffles for a healthy alternative!
Smoothies – I love smoothies. They are simple and easy to make and very filling. Instead of buying bags of frozen fruit, buy fruit on sale. Cut up into pieces and freeze! Here is my simple smoothie recipe:
1 cup low fat vanilla or plain yogurt
½ cup juice – orange or any thing like pineapple, coconut, mango – just no added sugar
1 cup frozen fruit – mix it up with blueberries, pineapple, a fresh banana anything
Blend!
I use frozen fruit instead of ice and fresh fruit. I think it blends better and you don’t get watered down ice chunk flavor!
Instant Oatmeal – No, not the prepackaged oatmeal with dinosaurs on the box. One, this is expensive and two, they are full of sugar. Make your own instant packages. Check out Budget101.com’s ideas!
Don’t forget about good ole’ peanut butter or egg whites on toast with a side of fruit!
Whatever you decide there are many healthy options for breakfast. And while you are getting your kids breakfast ready, make sure to get something in your tummy too!
